As One Direction close out the chapter on their U.S. tour this weekend, the guys are already thinking about their next project, their sophomore album release.
They dropped their chart-topping, record-breaking debut, Up All Night, abroad in November 2011 before launching their U.S. invasion with the album back in March. And now, according to Niall Horan, they’ve already been kicking around tracks for their next release.
“We’ve been recording already, actually,” Horan shared with MTV News. “When we came back from Australia, we had a couple weeks off and then we went straight into the studio to get cracking on the next album.
“We wrote an absolutely cracking song that we’re all kind of very excited about. … And then last week we were in L.A. and we had five days off the tour to record in L.A. so we recorded more there,” Horan said, adding that they intend to spend all of July and August “getting the album done.”
Up All Night songwriter Ed Sheeran has teased that he will hit the studio with the guys later this summer and they appear to be on some tight deadlines as well, with an expected fourth-quarter release looming in the not-so-far-off distance.
“Then obviously we’ve got to make a decision for a single soon, ’cause we have to get a single out towards September, I suppose. So obviously we don’t have a date for that yet, so we’re gonna have to start thinking, sitting down with the record label, sitting down with management, getting everyone’s views. Obviously everyone was on the same page [last time]. It’s usually not a struggle,” he said, before breaking down how the band and their team work together on every detail.
“The way it works for us, I don’t know how everyone else works but, people don’t see the meetings that we do, the all-day meetings about the album, and the way the songs are going to be even listed on the back of the album and album artwork,” he explained. “We want to have the most control that we possibly can of everything that we do. Like at the moment, I’m just proofreading the single artwork for the next single. They don’t see that.”
While Horan couldn’t tell us too many specifics about the upcoming tracks, he did confirm one thing: The rumors that the lead single would be called “Heartbreaker” are not true.
“I read that on Twitter,” he said. “It’s not true at all. We actually don’t even have a song called ‘Heartbreaker.’ That’s not gonna happen.”

#StopZerrie
